What is a role play?
A role play is when we get students to
pretend to be someone else and to imagine that they are in a particular
situation. The main aim of role plays is to provide freer speaking practice
Why should students
pretend?
·
It allows you to cover
a wide range of topics.
·
To practice various
structures and vocabulary items.
·
To feel more relaxed.
·
To imitate real life
communication.
Setting up role plays in class.
1.
The preparation stage.
These are the areas to be covered in
this stage:
·
Setting a context and
teaching any necessary vocabulary. The context may be a reading or a listening
text.
·
Presenting and
practicing language: Grammar, vocabulary and necessary phrases.
·
Time to read the role.
Remember to make the situation very clear before you distribute the role cards.
Who are they? Parents and their children? A doctor and his patient? What is the
situation? Maybe the son came home late, or the patient has an illness, or the
teacher has to talk to the student about his bad marks. Then distribute the
role cards. It is useful to check the students’ understanding of the roles.
This can be done by asking basic comprehension questions. Eg. What time is it? How old is your son? How are you feeling?
2.
The practice stage.
Time to think of useful language and
phrases. A pyramid discussion-type-task can be useful for this. First, students
think of some useful language on their own, then they check this with a
partner. Next, they work in a bigger group of three or four. Therefore, by the
end of the discussion, they have a large phrase bank which they can use. They
have had the support and received confidence from their classmates. This is
very useful especially for shy or weak students
3.
The role play.
We need to change the student pairings
in this stage, and student A does the role play with student B. The teacher’s
role here is to monitor, listening for examples of language use – both good
examples and language that isn’t used correctly.
4.
Feedback.
Content feedback – a simple discussion
on how the role play went. You could ask students for something that their
partner said, or what the result of the role play was.
Language feedback – this is where you
can show good examples of language that you heard, and also work on common
language mistakes that happened during the role play.
Bridging the Vocabulary Gap
Teaching new words is one of the most
important part of language learning. Sometimes students find it difficult to
memorize large numbers of new vocabulary. So how should we approach teaching
new lexis?
When presenting new vocabulary it is
important to know how to introduce it to students so that it is easy to
understand and remember the meaning.
We should also consider the best ways to
practice, memorise and recycle new vocab effectively.
And finally, how to help students to be
able to use new vocab in their speech fluently, easily and confidently.
Below are some tips and ideas that
should help you!
1.
Introduce new words
through MPF (Meaning-Pronunciation-Form)
First introduce the meaning* of the word. Check
that all the students understand it by asking Concept Checking Questions (for
example, ask: Are dinosaurs tiny? to
check is student understand the meaning of tiny). Then drill the pronunciation of the word.
Only after that, should you write the
word on the board. Remember to identify the part of speech and mark the stress
(if it is a problem for the students) or pronunciation peculiarities if there
are any.
*Ways of introducing new vocabulary
a) We are usually tempted to start explaining the words straightaway.
However, there is a way that can help get our students’ brain working. We can
elicit the words that our students know or heard before through:
·
Miming
·
Drawing
·
Lists
·
Synonyms
·
Antonyms
·
Gapped words
·
Gapped sentences
b) If there is no point in eliciting because we are absolutely sure
the vocabulary is unfamiliar to the students then we can explain. This can also be done
in different ways:
·
Giving the definition
·
Providing the word in
a sentence (context)
·
Using realia
·
Using scales
c) To make the lesson less teacher-centred and to diagnose our student’s
knowledge as well as promote peer teaching we can use the Test-Teach-Test
approach (TTT). Here you need to create the need for the language, students
understand what language they need to use if they don’t know it they’ll ask
their peers and later the teacher. In such way, the language becomes more
memorable.
2.
Provide a lot of practice
When
doing controlled practice exercises
make sure your students write in their notebooks not in the course book so that
it stays clean and can be used later again.
Try to make the most of the controlled
practice exercise before moving on to the new task. For example, set pair
work memory activities.
3.
Allocate enough time
for freer practice (speaking activities)
At
the fluency stage, encourage
students to make true sentences about themselves. Personalisation is key to
developing students’ fluency. Remember to provide model sentences so that
students will know how to build correct sentences.
Vocabulary Games
Back to the board
Divide your students into two groups.
One volunteer from each group sits on a chair with their backs to the board,
facing their group.
The teacher writes a word on the board
so that the volunteer can't see the word.
Their group must give
explanations/synonyms/antonyms to their volunteer so that their volunteer
guesses the word first.
The first one to guess the word gets a
point for their team.
Then the next member of the team sits on
the chair. And so on.
Works great for all levels. You can
practice any vocabulary.
Miming
Divide the class into two groups. In
turns team members come to the front of the class and mime the words/phrase
that the teachers gives them on a slip of paper.
The team that first guesses the
word/phrase that is being mimed wins a point.
Vocabulary Games for Recycling
Words in a file
Write the words which you want to
recycle on small slips of paper.
Put them in a file.
At the beginning of the lesson students
in turns take one slip of paper from the file and the task is to make a logical
and grammatically correct sentence with the word.
If the class is satisfied with the
sentences then the students can keep the card.
If not, the another student has to take
the same card and make a new sentences. If it’s correct he/she keeps it.
The student with the most cards at the
end of the activity is the winner.
Ideas for Vocabulary Practice Activities
It is generally recommended to provide
some sort of controlled practice activities so that the students get time to
think about each word in a safe environment. Other activities that can be used
are:
Odd One Out
Type, or write on the blackboard, sets
of three words. The students have to choose which one is the odd one out. It
doesn’t matter what the correct answer is – as long as students can justify
their opinion. The aim is to get them thinking about the meaning of words.
Positive, negative or neutral
Make three columns, students put the
words in what they think is the most suitable column. Sometimes there may be a
debate about if the word is either positive or negative, but that can be a good
thing – as students are discussing the word, they are practising it.
Call my bluff
This activity is very good for revising
vocabulary. The teacher chooses which words he/she wants to revise, or these
could simply be words taken from the wordlist at the back of the students'
book. The teacher gives different groups of words to the students, who are
going to work in pairs. Each pair writes 3 definitions for each word – one
correct definition and two incorrect ones. When this is done, each pair joins
another pair. The pairs take it in turns to read their definitions to each
other, and the other pair tries to guess the correct meaning of each word.
True or False
This is very easy to organise. The
teacher writes 4 sentences about herself on the board. Some of the sentences
are true and some are false. Each of the sentences contains some of the
vocabulary that you want to practise. The students have to guess which ones are
true and which ones are false. One way that they students can check their
answers is to ask questions to the teacher to find out. This makes the activity
communicative and more interactive. This activity can be followed-up by
students writing their own true / false sentences.
Back to the Board
This is a competitive and dynamic
activity for learners of different ages and levels. Students are divided into
two or three groups. Ask one student from each group to sit in a chair with
their backs to the board, facing their group. Write a word on the board so that
the students in the chairs can't see the word. Other students must give clues
and explanations without using the word so that their volunteer guesses the
word. The first student to guess the word gets a point for their team.
у present simple. Група 2, піднімайте руку, коли почуєте present continuous;
o
Порахуйте, скільки правильних та неправильних дієслів у
минулому часі ви почуєте в тексті;
o
(Reading sub-skills)
Попередні припущення
(Predicting)
(Skimming)
(Scanning)
Це
вже не читання для розуміння суті, а побіжний перегляд тексту, мета якого –
знайти саме ту інформацію, яка нас цікавить (ціни, дати, імена, місця, певна
лексика). Ця навичка включає вміння ігнорувати все те, що не стосується
поставленого перед учнем завдання. Основними умовами цього є також чітке
формулювання завдання та встановлення ліміту часу на читання тексту.
Детальне читання тексту
(Reading for detail)
(Multiple choice)
- альтернативний вибір (True/False)
- відповіді на питання (Answering questions)
- альтернативний вибір (True/False)
- відповіді на питання (Answering questions)
І пам’ятаймо: визначальним
фактором у тому, яку навичку учні мають використати під час читання тексту, є
не сам текст, а завдання, яке його супроводжує.
Developing Strategies for Use of English Tasks
The ZNO Use of English task can be a
difficult one for students for many reasons. In class, each grammar point is
often taught separately, however, in Use of English tasks, the grammar is all
integrated together.
In addition, Use of English texts can be
quite long – it is usually a story or a description of something – and students
can easily get lost as they read the text while they have to look at the
options at the same time. Furthermore, the options are often quite similar to
each other; they are either words that have similar meanings, all the options
may begin with the same first two letters, the options may all be prepositions
and so on.
As teachers, our job in class is to
continually upgrade and develop students’ vocabulary and grammar as the years
go on. As well as this, we need not only to provide them with exam tasks, but
students would greatly benefit from receiving strategies, tips and clues on how
to approach Use of English tasks, and during the year, teachers can work on
this with their students.
How to treat Use of English tasks in class
1. Treat the Use of English task as a text
In class, train students to notice the
title of the task. Ask them to read the title, and then to predict what they
think the text will be about. Another possibility is to get them to predict 10
words that they think will be in the text. This draws their attention to the
title, and also gives them a reason to read the text.
Pictures can help to predict – they make
the task more visible. However, if you don’t have pictures, the teacher can
simply write 5 or 6 key content words from the text on the board. The
prediction task for the students is to guess how these words are linked
together to form one situation. Then, they read the text to check whether or
not they predicted correctly.
2. Set general and detailed reading tasks
We have time to do this in class. The
reason is that if students have a good understanding of what the text is about,
there is a better chance that they can correctly decide the answers to the exam
task. Therefore, we can ask students to read to check their predictions.
Teachers can also quickly prepare some true or false sentences about the text.
Another option is to ask general comprehension questions to the whole class
verbally. The aim here is for students to know the content of the text, which
helps them to do the Use of English task.
3. Don’t look at the options yet
The options can take the students’
attention away from the text. If a student is looking at the text and the
options at the same time, they can get a bit lost and confused. We can advise
students to cover the options and try to work out the answer based on what they
read. This focuses their full attention on the text and gets them to read what
is written before and after the gap. There is a greater chance that they will
notice clues or time phrases, such as ‘yet, while, already’, and so on. Then
when they look at the options, they will have a good idea of what they are
looking for.
4. Look at the options
We said above that the options are
confusing and can distract students from the text. However, when they have
worked out what they think is missing (as we described above) they can look at
the options. That way, they will be looking at the options with something more
specific in mind, and they will perhaps be less confused by the similarity of
the options.
5. Re-read the text
5. Re-read the text
If there is time, students should be
strongly encouraged to re-read their text to check it. A way of encouraging
this in class can be to ask students to read the text that their partner has
written, or simply to check their answers with their partner’s answers.
6. Check the answers
As
a way of further drawing students attention to the areas which come up in Use
of English tasks, it is often useful to ask them to identify the grammar areas
that were tested. For example, after checking the answer to each question, ask
them what grammar point it was. This will get them into the habit of doing so
automatically themselves.
If the task is based on vocabulary, it is useful to draw students’ attention to dependent prepositions, collocations and phrasal verbs. They need to know that these areas are tested in the vocabulary section.
Conclusion: Classroom Practice vs Exam Day

Conclusion: Classroom Practice vs Exam Day
Remember, the strategies and approach
described above are for classroom use. In class, we have more time than
students do on the day of the exam. Therefore, we can use this time to train
our students in ways of approaching Use of English tasks. With plenty of
training, it is thought that students will naturally be more equipped to pay
more attention to things like context, clue words and so on.

Fun).
